Coach King and Coach Patton both talked about the 7th and 8th grade programs and finishing 2nd in the 7th grade tourney and 3rd in the 8th grade tournament. Both had very successful seasons and commented on how we have alot of good players coming up in the program. Kelly Purkey talked about the youth programs: 3rd Grade Girls The third grade girls team had a very successful year. As third-grade is the first year of competitive basketball we focused on skill development above winning at all costs. We had a few girls that had never played organized basketball before. We also had several girls that played in the upward leagues the last couple of years. The girls did a great job working together and improving throughout the season. Overall we finished with a winning record both in the league and overall. In the year-end tournament we won our first game handly and then beat Preble Shawnee in the second game. Preble Shawnee was previously undefeated on the season. We then played in the semi finals and had a big lead the entire game but could not hold on in the end. We had to settle for third place in the tournament. Overall it was a great season and the girls got better as the year went on. Rodney Bailey was the assistant coach and did a great job working with the girls. We can't wait for next year to see what kind of steps we can take forward with their development. Coach Andy 4th Grade Girls I have the privilege of coaching a great group of hard working 4th grade girls. This year we took our team to a new level. We had a slow start but the girls "never give up attitude" took them to a Runner Up finish in the Dayton Metro Tournament. We beat the number one team in regular season by one point with only a few seconds to go in the game. I couldn't be prouder of these girls and their season and they are a great example that hard work, great teamwork and great attitudes will make you succeed as a team. I am also proud to say that three of our girls have made the Beavercreek Stars AAU team so I only expect an even greater success as the girls continue to sharpen their skills. 5th Grade Girls: After winning the league and tournament as fourth graders, the current 5th grade team moved up to the Division 2 level to take on a higher competitive level. There was not a Division 1 level, so the team battled with larger schools throughout the season and competed very well to a .500 season. The team roster had four new players this year and they helped solidify a peak season ending run in which many coaches complemented the 5th grade girls as the strongest finishing team in the league. The roster includes younger siblings of current High school players including Lexie Shaffer and D’Laney Lezotte, Hannah Gill, Rylee Click, Grace Moore and Olivia Reeder coached by assistant, Todd Butterbaugh and Head Coach, Scott Stiles. 5th Grade - Coached by Joe Anderson 5th grade girls team had a very solid year especially considering we had 4 new players with very limited basketball experience. The team of Lydia Anderson, Morgan Bowman, Sammie Burnett, Holland Jaramillo, Lucy Krumholtz, Maddie Lawson, Rhiannon Morse, and Kierstin Williams played in two leagues this year and finished the season with 10 wins and 14 losses. We finished 2-2 in the year end tournament for a 5th place finish out of 10 teams. I will say we played our best basketball of the season in the tournament. We were only down 6 to Carlisle going into the fourth quarter a team that beat us by 20 earlier in the season and Lebanon beat us by 5 in our last game who had previously beat us by 13. By the end of the season, I felt we were one of the best defensive teams in our league. The girls played with heart and even in our losses gave 100%. Thanks, Joe Anderson 6th Grade Girls: The girls went down to one team this year with 11 players. Kendra Neely, Carli Brown, Gabby Price, Kenzie Purkey, Lydia Vrettos, Ashton Stiles, Victoria Wheeland, Devin Phillips, Kennedy Deters, Gracie VanSchaik and Haylee Hook, Head Coach Kelly Purkey and Kurt Purkey. While our record in league play didn't compliment they way the girls actually finished, it was evident that there was a great amount of growth that occurred over the season. Throughout the season the girls played approximately 28 games including many division one and division two games. The girls had some phenomenal games against Carlisle and Franklin which are both division 2 and two of our toughest opponents but they ended up closing both games with less than a 8 point deficit, huge accomplishment. The team ended up finishing 3rd overall in tournament play and proved they were a force. They lost both games in the double elimination tournament to Madison and both games only by 3 points! The team ended up settling for 3rd in tournament but got to watch Madison (undefeated for the season) lose to Valley View in the finals in overtime. All of the top 3 teams were very well matched. It was a great season and a great way to hand them over to the Lady Spartan Program! Today weightlifting begins after school on Wednesdays and Fridays. No post moves today because Baseball and Softball will be inside due to weather. Don't forget we will be sending out more info for camps and summer schedules.
